Your LinkedIn Profile & Social Media

Many of us are already on LinkedIn.  Some industries are stepping away a bit from LinkedIn because it is overused and professionals are constantly being contacted by recruiters and offshore recruiting services.  Other industries, such as food, fresh produce, agribusiness, aren't close to that saturation point.

For those who aren’t active users or don’t utilize it, LinkedIn is the professional social platform for job search, professional connections, business prospecting, idea sharing, and networking.  If you are looking for a job, career, or career change, you should be on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is used daily by recruiters, HR teams, and hiring managers looking for talent, as well as for job seekers looking for their next career move.

First, you need to ensure your profile features solid information.  Here are some recommendations:

Pro Tip From Roy Ruhling:  Expert Executive Recruiter, Roy Ruhling, has a terrific recommendation: "Here's an idea for candidates: Create an email (e.g., FN_LN_Career@Gmail.com) exclusively for career networking opportunities, job opportunities, etc. Put this email on your public LinkedIn profile and let all recruiters ping you with opportunities. You may or may not log into that email on a regular basis so let's say you're very happy with your job and not interested in looking around. But one day you walk into work and things have changed and you decide to start looking. You log into that email and you have a database of warm leads to reach out to to start networking with."

One LinkedIn Setting You Need To Know:  Seeking a job now?  There is a setting within your profile that will let recruiters and HR people know you are open to opportunities.  LinkedIn recently moved this to your main profile page directly.  It is also in your profile settings:

 ~ Click your profile

 ~ Settings & Privacy

~ Job Seeking Preferences (may show up on the left as one of the primary headers/areas of Settings)

~ Let Recruiters Know You Are Open To Opportunities - set to yes/ok

There are several settings in this area to set up how you would like to conduct your search on LinkedIn.  Review and customize to your liking.  Note: LinkedIn is continuously changing, and this feature / setting may move to other areas of your profile.

Your Email Address:  When job hunting, consider creating a professional email address for your resume, job boards, and search.  Don’t use an unprofessional email address. Addresses that include your name or job function are advisable.  Additional thoughts on email addresses:
